In 2005, I worked at a bank’s call center. I liked my job, and I was good at it. I had opened over $250,000 in new accounts that year and been promoted to a supervisor position. Between calls, I had developed an intranet knowledge base that had become critical to operations and there had been talk of installing it on each of our 200-plus banks.

I was respected by my bosses and admired by my peers. I was on my way up the company ladder. I had the enormous desk in the corner. Everything appeared to be going my way. So why did I feel so empty inside? Why did I never feel a bit like I was adequate? Why did I find myself sitting at my desk one morning crying?

Because I have type II bipolar disorder.

Only I couldn’t know it at the time. I only knew that for some reason life just didn’t seem worth the effort. My administrator saw me crying and knew something was wrong. He also knew I had been working diligently and richly deserved some time off anyhow. He me to take some vacation time and relax, dropping the hint that maybe I should talk with a mental health counselor. I did, and that’s when I was diagnosed.

I had never considered it before. Are not bipolar folk insane and perilous? I might be a tiny eccentric, but I’m not “nuts”. I’d never even been THINKING about injuring somebody. Of course I can’t be bipolar! I knew that SOMETHING was wrong, though, and since I did not know what it was, I couldn`t see that I had anything to lose by listening to a psychoanalyst. After all, he’s the professional.

I started medication—antidepressant and a mood stabilizer—and did a little reading about bipolar disorder. Lots of what I read sounded a lot like me, but not all of it. I learned that it influenced less than 2% of the population; it was indicated by swapping times of depression and either mania of hypomania, often with periods of normal mood between; that it was one of the number one factors behind homelessness; and that around 20% of those who have it commit suicide.

Of course, learning this statistical data didn’t help my depression in any way at all. In reality it sent my hysteria levels rocketing. To make things worse, while this was happening to me, Rigoberto Alpizar was gunned down in Miami Global Airfield for running around, acting crazy and claiming he had a bomb. He didn’t, of course. He was just bipolar.

Was that going to happen to me? Would I be one of those people that freaked out and either got themselves finished or rubbed out myself? I had to grasp, so I read more. What I learned next was more alarming than any of that.

Bipolar disorder, AKA manic depression, is one of the simplest psychological diseases to treat.

This decreased my tension level significantly, nevertheless it upset me a bit. If bipolar disorder is so easy to treat, then why do so many folk who’ve it wind up homeless? Why do so many commit suicides?

I did not have too much time to contemplate this. Initially, I was simply too depressed to do anything but lie around like a pile and worry my family. Then, the meds started working. I got to feeling better, and by the time I had swept up on all of the family requirements I had been ignoring, it was time to go back to work.

When I returned, everyone was happy to have me back. Well, pretty much everyone. Though management hadn’t said anything about why I was gone, I wasn’t ashamed. It’s just an illness and it’s easily treatable, right? I told a few folks, who told a few more folks, for example. Pretty shortly everybody knew. Most were supportive, but some were not.

To people who knew nothing about my disorder, I was not the funny bloke who everyone liked, the bright guy with the computer skills, and the guy who was always pleased to lend a hand. To them, I became the scary guy who cried at his desk, the threatening wacko who could blow at any moment. To them, I was the freak in the corner, and no debate could persuade them otherwise. Of course, all of them saw what that one guy did at that airport.

In the seven years I worked for that bank, I never hurt anybody. But that is enough about me for now. In my next article, I’ll address some of the common misconceptions about bipolar disorder that will have caused my coworkers to think of me that way.

Until next time, keep fighting.

The Nutcase in the Corner? Oh, that’s the Author; Bryce Albertson. “I have type II bipolar disorder.” – “I’d never considered it before.” – “Are not bipolar folks insane and perilous?”

According to the Toddlertime website, Zoloft is used to treat symptoms of major depressive illness including bipolar disorder or manic depression. What is considered as a serious illness causing mood and physiological changes that significantly interferes with a person’s daily functioning is major depression.

Although, Pscyhcentral website states that Zoloft medication can cause several side effects such as Zoloft birth defects as well as dry mouth, tremor or muscle spasms, nervousness, trouble sleeping, headache, drowsiness, nausea, insomnia, headache, increased sweating, dizziness, change in sexual function.

The associate director of the mental health Charity Rethink, Jane Haris spoke to WebMD about the publicity regarding Zeta-Jone’s treatment for bipolar illness can be good for other people with the same disorder and those who are prone to feel stigmatized.

A mixture of medication and talk therapy is suitable for people with bipolar disorder,Harris says. Talk Therapy is being recommended by Harris before those patients who seek medical professional help get into medication.

Once Catherine Zeta-Jones gets the right treatment, Harris said that she will be back shooting a film soon.

A depression test can also be very good if you are experiencing depression symptoms and wonder if you may perhaps have a form of clinical depression. You’ll find many depression tests online. However, once taking 1 it’s imperative to make certain that it’s legitimate and reliable. As it is possible to imagine, there are numerous “rogue” testing available that have been not professionally developed. Where case, you will discover only several testing on the internet which are legitimate and worth your consideration so proceed with caution once taking these tests. In most cases, the screening are formulated to test for your specific type of depression such as Geriatric depression, Bipolar Disorder, and Major Depressive Disorder

Personally, in my practice, I use the Beck’s Depression Inventory. It’s an “oldie but goody” and was extremely well created and is really a very good diagnostic tool to see if my consumers are depressed and, if they are, how serious it may well be. The Beck Depression Inventory is protected by a copyright so you will not discover it legally obtainable on the web. Rather, only mental well being professionals can administer and score the test. This is important since you don’t want to be misdiagnosed.

When a depression test is legitimate it’s a beneficial test and proven to become statistically relevant in determining whether the test taker may perhaps or may not be depressed. The key to a legitimate test is to make sure that it meets the “Standards for Education and Psychological Testing”. This way you happen to be ensured that the test is professionally developed, statistically relevant and the final results – reliable. It would not be a great point to get a depression test indicate you are depressed when you are not or vice versa – you are not depressed after in reality you quite are. In the latter case, a misperception can trigger the person suffering needlessly and by no means getting the aid that they need!

I have applied several screening in my practice and have discovered some offered on-line which are legitimate and meet the standards. With some search there are legitimate diagnostic tests as well. Take in a single of them or eat all of them. It doesn’t extremely matter. The key once taking a test is to use the results as an indication as to whether you happen to be depressed. It is essential to note that these testing aren’t to be used for formal diagnosis. Rather they are merely an indicator as to what could possibly be heading on.

If you feel you will be clinically depressed then you might be encouraged to seek out a professional that give you a proper diagnosis and, together, you can determine one of the most treatment plan so you may believe better once possible. Did you know that more than 19 million People suffer with depression and, of that 19 million only 30% ever get the aid they need? What’s far more is that as soon as they start treatment 80% of them will feel better in just a couple of weeks! Depression is extremely treatable. The key is early detection and an proper treatment plan and you’ll be well on your method to recovery!

Function of Antidepressants

Antidepressants especially those under the SSRI class, work by limiting the reuptake of serotonin. In this way, the levels of serotonin in the brain are maintained. Serotonin is a chemical in the brain that has an effect on our mood. In depression, serotonin is found to be in low levels. Opposite to that are individuals with symptoms of panic or anxiety.

What Happens When it’s Used in Bipolar Disorder?

A person with this condition may be depressed at one time and irritable or extremely active on the other. Medications used for bipolar disorder are mood stabilizers such as lithium and anticonvulsants. Before, antidepressants were prescribed in patients with Bipolar disorder but should be as an adjunct therapy to mood stabilizers. Rapid cycles of depression and mania are being avoided hence the adjunct therapy. However, future studies have proven that antidepressants are no longer effective in managing bipolar disorder even with mood stabilizers. Also, atypical antipsychotic medications are used in the management of bipolar disorder but other medications should be taken together with the drug to avoid fatal side effects. Medications, no matter how therapeutic, still have a number of side effects. Zoloft for example, an antidepressant, is associated with Zoloft birth defects which prompted the FDA to release warnings on the drug apart from precautions on it not to be used in cases of bipolar disorder. Psychotherapy is also a management for this condition but the effects are usually seen after quite some time, in most cases.

In the U.S., an estimated 17 million adult Americans are known to have depression during a 1-year period. Depression is one of the mental illnesses that has been misinterpreted over time. People view it as a sign of weakness rather than an illness that requires support and medical attention. Misdiagnosis is also common in major depression because its symptoms can also be found in other mental illnesses such as bipolar disorder. When a confirmed diagnosis has been made, the first line of treatment will usually consist of antidepressant medications. One medication often prescribed is Zoloft. However, this can also serve as a risk because reports showed that children and young adolescents under antidepressant therapy such as Zoloft had increased tendencies in having suicide ideations. Apart from that, the report that Zoloft can cause more than the cardiac birth defects when taken during pregnancy is alarming. There are alternative treatments to depression aside from medications and that includes psychotherapy.

What is Psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy is a treatment modality performed in patients suffering from major depression but is also applicable for other mental disorders. This treatment plan sees the individual as a person with normal response to experience and survival. Unlike the medical model where it views depression as a disease, the psychotherapy model tries to understand the person and heal by knowing the source of depression. The approach of psychodynamics to depression is that it is a defense mechanism or a coping behaviour of an individual to avoid further pain or suffering, emotionally speaking.

How Can Psychotherapy Help?

It helps by assisting the person with depression gain self-awareness. Your therapist is there to help you identify the problems that may have contributed to your condition and may give you solutions in solving or improving them. He/she can also point out negative behaviours or ideations that come with the illness. However, the initial role of your therapist is to help you understanding the meaning behind the thoughts and feelings that you have. He/she can help you establish coping mechanisms ideal for your situation so you can have the ultimate goal which is to regain control and pleasure in life. Psychotherapy can be used in adjunction with medications as this is also helpful in mood stabilizing. However, side effects from medications can happen like the birth defects caused by Zoloft, a type of antidepressant.

People that experience it will not have the mood for doing anything and all around them will seem grey and dark.

More to that, when you have it, you will also get to be let in on memory problems, which will impact your life severely. Also, it is not strange that such people will get to pass from one type of behavior to another. These are called mood swings.

The Bipolar Disorder was looked upon in the past as a condition that only teens would be let in on, yet it seems that this was a wrong assumption, for many people get to be affected by it, without actually pertaining to that age group. There will usually be many years that people will suffer from depression until they will get to be let in on professional help. Many don’t even know they are dealing with something and the wait makes it worse.

You will see that when you will get to be let in on such treatment, it will be kind of expensive at times. Also, the drugs will get to make you feel sleepy, so that is not good to begin with. Yet in time, you will see that this sleepiness will go away. So don’t worry about it too much.

If you know that you have depression, then it is recommended you will get it solved as soon as you can. The more time passes, the worse it will get and the harder it will be for you to get rid of it.

If you love alcohol, then you should know that depression pills are really not a good combination to throw in. You will experience side effects that can even put your life in danger, so be careful what you are doing. Of course, that is not the only problem, because if you will get to drink certain amounts of alcohol, as much as to not endanger your life, you will see that you will get to cancel the beneficial effects of the pills.
